Kanye West announced today that he will be buying the controversial social media app Parler after facing several restrictions on more popular apps such as Twitter and Instagram.
Controversy over censorship of political opinions has been around for some time now as many conservatives believe that their ideas and beliefs are prevented from being shared online. Kanye West stated, “In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves.” Much of his frustration arose after having posts removed from Twitter including an antisemitic tweet from Mr. West just last week. He also experienced numerous posts being removed from his Instagram account.
Parler itself has experienced its own setbacks as the app was removed from both the Apple store and Google Store after violating policies in January of 2021. Since then, Parker returned to the Apple store in May of 2021 but did not return to the Google store until last month.
Parler and other “alt-media” platforms have been on the rise as of late as conservatives attempt to find ways to share thoughts and ideas outside of mainstream social media. The Musk Twitter deal arose out of concerns over free speech on the platform as well as Trump's development of Truth Social.
The price for which Kanye has agreed to buy Parler has yet to be revealed.
