Jio Space Enters the Satellite Constellation Race

Issue 110

SpaceX and OneWeb are getting yet another competitor as Jio Platforms Ltd. has entered into a joint venture with SES S.A. to create the world's 3rd broadband service utilizing satellite technology.

The new company coming out of the joint venture will be known as Jio space.  Jio Platforms will own 51% of the new company with SES owning the rest.

Jio Space’s satellite constellation will “multi-gigabit internet capacity to companies, retail users as well as the back-end of wireless networks across India and the neighboring regions, according to the statement.” according to a statement by the company.

Jio Platforms, which is owned by Reliance Industries Ltd. will use the development of Jio’s satellite broadband internet to expand on the company's massive telecom infrastructure presence throughout India.

Fortunately for Jio Space, competitor SpaceX was asked by India’s government to return the money it collected from over 200,000 pre-orders of Starlink’s services stating that SpaceX does not have the licensing required to operate throughout India.  This will leave an open market come the development of Jio’s constellation.
